If you want to learn to play guitar, you have to start with the basics just like every other thing you learn in life.

Here are the most frequently asked questions from beginners like yourself:

Do I need my own guitar in order to learn?

No.  You do not need to buy your own guitar just yet.  Although you always have the option of owning a guitar even before you start formal lessons, it is not a requirement for you to buy one.

If you are taking basic music lessons, the necessary instruments will be supplied.  However, note that it would be beneficial if you get used to the guitar that you will be playing.

If you are to take this art seriously, you may as well invest in a quality guitar. You will feel more comfortable as you advance through your lessons and you would not have to adjust to a another one.

Do I need to take formal lessons immediately?

The answer really depends on how serious you want to be in learning this skill.  You always have the option of trying to learn on your own using simple guides but if you want to learn faster and become more proficient, it is strongly recommended that you take formal lessons.

How often should I practice and is there such a thing as over practicing?

It really depends on your schedule and how well you can take the stress on your hands.  During the first few times, you will feel really sharp pain on your finger tips and knuckles so you might have to take it a little slow.

However, once you have adjusted, it will get easier and less painful.  There is no such thing as over practicing per se but you will eventually tire out, in which case rest would be necessary.  You should note though, that the more you practice, the easier it will get.

How do I find a great trainer and a great training program?

You can get this information through a little bit of research.  It is important that pick the right teacher who will be able to guide you through the process as well as the learning curve.  One-on-one sessions may be necessary if you think that you are a slow learner or if you want to have the best and undivided attention of the teacher.

This may cost a little bit more than you have expected but if you are really serious in wanting to learn, you would consider it a very wise investment in your future.
